| Most Common Name: | SAM-e | | Also
Known As (other names): | S-adenosylmethionine |
S-adenosylmethionine, commonly known as SAM-e recently created a stir world
wide as the new wonder drug of the century. Many of the claims around this
supplement that originate in Europe have still to be substantiated but there is
already a lot of anecdotal evidence that it is effective against depression, arthritis and
a myriad of other complaints. SAM-e plays a big role in the production of
hormones and cell membranes. Young people produce an adequate supply of SAM-e to
not need to take the supplement but as we age our bodies progressively reduce
the production of this essential compound. Please keep in mind that this
supplement has not been on the market for long enough to validate all the claims
made. We list below all the conditions where there is numerous claims of success
but cannot vouch for the accuracy or correctness. The studies that were
conducted (and there were many in Europe) were all around SAM-e's use against
depression and, to a lesser extent, arthritis. As with all new supplements
it has been on the market for too short to be able to determine if there are
long term side effects. At present it appears that side effects are minimal but
we are not sure.
