General description and domicile:
Tobacco was first smoked by the South American native people. From there the
habit of smoking tobacco traveled north into what is today known as the US where
it was adopted by the Native Americans.
It was not Sir Walter Raleigh that brought tobacco to Europe, as is popular
belief because it was known and used in Spain and France for some 30 years
before it was introduced into Britain by Sir Walter.
It is an annual that grows to two meters tall
with very large bitter tasting leaves with an acrid smell. The most
significant constituent is nicotine which is a very strong poison.
