Common Name/s: |
Latin, Zoological, Botanical and mineralogical name/s: |
| Conium, Con. |
Hemlock, Spotted hemlock |
Conium Maculatum |
General description and domicile:
Native to Europe, Britain, Africa and parts of Asia the Hemlock plant is related
to parsley and fennel but that is where the similarity ends. Hemlock is very
poisonous while the others are not. Every part of it contains an extremely toxic
cocktail of alkaloids that is narcotic, causing paralysis of all the motor
functions in the body including cardiac and respiratory systems, with death
following soon.
The plant is not particularly attractive having elongated,
slender stems, sparse parsley-like leaves at junctures and clusters of dull
white flowers. It can be a tall gangly
plant of up to six foot and the stem is covered in reddish-purple spots.
Warning: Extreme care must be taken when handling this
plant as very little contact with hemlock can be fatal.
Part used and extraction:
All of the fresh plant is used, harvested in the flowering season.
Remedy preparation:
Chopped, mashed and steeped in alcohol to obtain mother tincture
History:
The history of hemlock is steeped in tales of deceit and mystery. It is said
that Socrates died from hemlock poisoning (at the time it was the official
medium for capital punishment in Greece) and it was a favorite of Shakespeare
who used it frequently in his plays.
Proved by Hahnemann
