Colchicum autumnale |
General description and domicile:
Native to North Africa, Europe and Britain this exceptionally poisonous
plant with its beautiful, crocus-like, flowers grows in meadows. The leaves
(dark green up to twelve inches long)_ and corms (roots and bulb) contain a
virulent poison (Colchinine) which causes severe diarrhea, vomiting, acute
inflammation of the intestines and inevitably death.
Although extracts from this perennial are used in conventional
medicine for the relief of gout this herb is regarded as far to toxic for herbal
use.
Warning: Extreme care must be taken when handling this
plant as it is very poisonous and even in small doses can be fatal.
Part used and extraction:
The corm (bulb) is used. Harvested in spring.
Remedy preparation:
Chopped and steeped in alcohol to obtain mother tincture
History:
The corm was used in ancient Arabia for gout and also for other joint pain
and there are many references that it was regarded as having medicinal
properties in England and Europe. As colchinine dosage is very critical (there
is a very small margin between a therapeutic and fatal dose) it was regarded as
too poisonous.
