Coffea Arabica |
General description and domicile:
There is almost no point in describing the Coffee plant as there are few
people that are not familiar with it.
The Coffee pant is indigenous to Ethiopia and possibly Abyssinia (but it may
have been introduced to Abyssinia over a thousand years ago) and is named after
the Abyssinian province Caffa. Coffee is cultivated in most tropical regions in
prodigious proportions to satisfy the world demand for the well-known beverage.
Although capable of growing to over ten meters in the wild it is kept to a
manageable three meters in the plantations.
It is a very attractive tree with dark green, shiny leaves and bright white
flowers that bloom for a very short time. The berries are red when ripe and
contain two seeds (the coffee beans) which are harvested, sun dried and then
milled to remove the dried berry and husk from the seeds.
Part used and extraction:
The coffee bean is used in homeopathy.
Remedy preparation:
Unroated, raw, beans are ground and macerated in, and steeped in alcohol to obtain mother tincture
History:
The use of coffee as a stimulant goes back into the dark ages. Originally
used in Northern Africa and Arabia it was introduced into Europe in the
sixteenth century from where it rapidly spread to all parts of the world.
Proved by Dr. Stapf.

Remedy profile:
The effect of coffee and the use of it in treatments is fundamental
to the philosophy and foundation of homeopathy. It is prescribed as a
homeopathic treatment for the very symptoms it causes in overdose. Overactive,
restless people, oversensitive and alert to the point of being tense. Senses are
acute and exaggerated. People who are over-motivated ("pumped") overexcited by
anticipating an event and cannot sleep or relax.
When ill these people become oversensitive to the symptoms, discomfort, pain and
noise become intolerable and senses become acute and overwhelming. Sleep becomes
more difficult and very disturbed with short restless periods of sleep.
Key Symptoms:
Hypractive, charged, sensitive, insomnia or restless sleep.
Used for treatment of:
Insomnia (agitated and restless)
Headaches (This requires careful consideration if the patient is
a heavy coffee user. It is a general rule in homeopathy that caffeine
consumption should be ceased during treatment. One of the effects of caffeine
withdrawal in heavy users is acute headaches in the first week. if this is the
case this remedy will have to be prescribed to commence after the withdrawal
effect has passed)
