General description and domicile:
There is little need to describe the common red onion as it is one of the better
known vegetables and can be found in virtually every kitchen.
The common red onion has been cultivated as a garden vegetable
for hundreds of years. It is available in vegetable shops and gardens in all
parts of the world.
Decongestant, diuretic and antiseptic properties of the onion
has made it a popular herbal remedy for hundreds of years.
Part used and extraction:
The bulb of the onion is used, harvested when mature.
Remedy preparation:
Chopped and steeped in alcohol for several days to obtain mother tincture
History:
The onion was hung outside houses to ward off the plague in the Middle Ages.
Proved by Dr Constantine Herring.
Remedy profile:
Coughs and colds that are very runny with watery catarrh respond best. Also
neuralgia and hay fever especially if accompanied by tearful eyes and runny
noses.
This remedy has no psychological or mental symptoms although the conditions it
works best for may cause irritability and melancholy.
Key Symptoms:
Burning Catarrh, Eye discharge that does not burn (as opposed to Euphrasia where
the eye discharge burns and the catarrh does not).

As always in homeopathy the primary use of any remedy is treatment of
conditions similar to the symptoms that the substance causes in an otherwise
