| A Tincture is a
method of extracting the desired substances from a herb by soaking the herb in
alcohol, ether or another volatile liquid substance for a prolonged period
during which the desired substances in the herb leaches into the liquid.
After
the required time (which is dependant on the herb but is normally no less than
two weeks) the liquid is poured off. Now, depending on the properties of
the herb the poured off liquid may be the tincture as all requires substances
and properties of the herb will be dissolved in the liquid but in some cases the
liquid is discarded and the soaked herbs are pressed to obtain the tincture. the
latter case only applies to those herbs that do not allow free circulation of
solvents thought their pores (i.e. they will allow the liquid in but retain the
liquid as well as the dissolved substances in their fibres).
