Common Name/s: Other Name/s: Botanical  name/s:
Stavesacre Licewort, Lousewort, Palmated Larkspur Delphinium Staphisagria

General description and domicile:
Native to the Mediterranean this smallish annual is now cultivated in Italy, France and Spain.
It grows to about two foot tall has grape vine-like leaves with pale purple flowers that bloom on a stalk, the bottom flowers opening first while the top flowers are just budding. Flowers appear in early spring and the last flowers finish in Autumn.

The Ancient Greeks and Romans used this herb for purging and as an emetic and as an external topical remedy for insect bites. I should imagine that they would have buried many patients as the seeds of this plant (which is the part used) contains a virulent poison that causes extreme hyperactivity and hypersensitivity before lapsing into paralysis and death by respiratory failure.

Remedy Profile
Major therapeutic effects:
This herb can only be used to poison parasites because it is just too poisonous to even consider ingesting. Even then I cannot recommend it as the slightest lesion of the skin may let this vicious into the bloodstream.

There are safer vermicides!

Minor therapeutic effects:
None that can be recommended.

How to choose the right remedy/Herb:
In many cases there are several herbal remedies to choose from. This can be very confusing. Our Choose the Herbal Remedy page explains how to refine your choice

Part used:
The dried seeds

Contra-indications:
Do not ingest!!! If you have to use this virulent poison topically please take care as the poison can enter the bloodstream through any small lesions like itchy-bites that have been scratched.

Properties:
Emetic
Cathartic
Poisonous
