The original source of Aspirin (although there are many other plants like the
Willow that could lay claim to this title too) the use of this herb dates back
to the early Middle Ages and before. Apart from its medicinal use the leaves and
flowers of this common plant were used as an air freshener and to flavour Mead. The
herb was used in wine to combat fevers and headaches and infusions were used to
treat almost every condition in the book.

Constituents: | | Below
we list reported constituents of this herb. This may not be complete as
continuous research constantly discovers new constituents. Where possible we
also provide information about constituents and their application, effect and
side effects, if any. We do not provide information on the interaction between
constituents. | |
Salicin - C13H1807:
A potent analgesic (pain reliever) fever reducer and
anti-inflammatory substance. Salicin and the closely related Salicylic acid can
have many serious side effects the most noted are: internal bleeding, diarrhoea,
nausea and respiratory paralysis in large doses.
Salicin is initially hydrolysed in the body to salicyl alcohol in the gut and
then oxidated in the liver to salicylic acid.
Salicin containing herbs are primarily used as analgesics, febrifuges and
anti-inflammatory.
Salicin is milder than salicylic acid (aspirin) on the gut having less tendency
to cause gastric haemorrhage (this is because it is only converted to salicylic
acid after absorption in the gut).
However people with salicylic sensitivity should avoid salicin containing
compounds. | Volatile oil | | Tannins | Ascorbic

Flavonoids: Flavonoids occur (as white and yellow plant pigments
found almost as commonly as chlorophyll) as Glycosides or in a free state. In
plants it is essential for protecting plant tissue from UV radiation and acts as
antioxidants. As pigments it is also responsible for Autumn colors in leaves and
yellow/red pigmentation in flowers. Laboratory experiments have been
conducted on the beneficiary effect of Flavonoids on the heart and circulatory
system. Flavonoids are also used to mitigate stress, especially environmental
stress. Flavonoids are often used for their antioxidant effect against free
radicals. There are also strong indications that they have antiviral,
anti-inflammatory and anti-hypertensive properties but dosage has not been
determined which will obviously have a profound effect on their efficacy as a
component of this herb. |
Phenolic Glycosides:
The Phenolic structure is found in many compounds of medicinal herbs. The group
Phenolic Glycosides include most of the flavonoids and anthraquinones. |
