Elacampane is indigenous to Europe and parts of Asia but is cultivated all
over the world in temperate areas. This furry plant can grow to six feet
and is quite pretty. It has large attractive yellow flower in summer, It has a
aromatic scent but tastes bitter. It was cultivated in the British isles
as a medicinal plant during the Middle Ages. It was also popular as a cure
against seasickness and a tonic by the Romans and Greeks. Today its use is
most common in Europe where it is extensively used as an expectorant and
diuretic in Germany, Denmark, Holland and Switzerland. The roots of
younger plants are used. Elecampane (Inula Helenium) is also known
as Scabwort, Starwort, Yellow Starwort, Wild Sunflower, Elf Dock, Velvet
Dock and Horseheal.
