Bittersweet Constituents (Bittersweet Ingredients):

Below we list reported constituents of Bittersweet. This may not be complete as continuous research constantly discovers new constituents.

Steroidal Alkaloids: A derivative of triterpenoids it is differentiated from other triterpenoids because of the presence of nitrogen in the molecule.

In the solanaceae group steroidal alkaloides occur as glycosides of which some are used in the synthesis of steroid drugs. These alkaloids are toxic.

Steroidal Saponins: Sometimes referred to as nortriterpenes steroidal saponins are not true triterpenes since their C27 ring skeletons cannot be broken up into isoprene units. Some steroidal saponins are used as precursors of sex hormones and are thought to be responsible for estrogenic activity of some herbs.
