Benzoin had had several names over the centuries. In older records it may be
called Gum Benjamin, Virgin Milk or even Balsam. Strictly speaking Benzoin
is not an oil, it is a resin harvested by scoring the bark of the tree very
similar to the harvesting of latex and chicle. It has been used in the
cosmetic industry for thousands of years and is still in use in the perfume
industry today. Benzoin has a definite sedative effect and it is not
recommended for use before driving or operating machinery.
