| Whooping Cough Description:
More accurately defined as Pertussis, whooping cough is a very contagious acute
respiratory disease caused by Bordetella pertussis.
Pertussis is a very infectious and serious disease that mostly affects children
under four years of age.
Initial symptoms are very similar to the common cold but it soon turns into the
"whooping phase" where the coughs are persistent and very exhausting. This
condition can take as long as three months to clear up and the patient is
capable of infecting others for a full month after the coughing has ceased.
Pertussis is characterized by the loud whooping while coughing.
