| Varicose Veins Description:
A varicose vein is a vein in which the valves are not functioning properly.
Along all veins there are valves that allows blood to flow to the heart but not
back (like a non-return valve). When these fail or leak this functionality
becomes limited and blood is allowed to dilate (overfill) the vein in places
creating, often unsightly, torturous veins that are not normally painful.
Varicose veins are very common, particularly in women after pregnancy. Varicose
veins occur mostly in the legs and are common in both men and women in
occupations where people have to stand for prolonged periods at a time.
Varicosis can get extreme and then it may be painful or uncomfortable.
