| Tinea Description:
Tinea describes a group of fungal skin infections mostly caused by several
dermatophytes. Tinea is itchy initially, followed by flaking of the skin
and, if not treated, painful lesions. Tinea frequently recurs and the
spores of the dermatophytes survive for prolonged periods in clothing and shoes,
reinfecting the site after cessation of treatment. Because of this stubborn
reoccurrence it is advisable to continue treatment for a while after the
symptoms disappear. The most common form of tinea is tinea pedis an
infection that starts between the toes. other forms of tinea are tinea
versicolor of the upper torso, tinea unguium of the nails, tinea nigra on the
hands and other areas, tinea capitis of the scalp (often confused with
dandruff), tinea cruris of the groin and tinea corporis of the non-hairy parts
of the body.
