Tennis Elbow Description:

The correct medical term for Tennis Elbow is Lateral Humeral Epicondylitis.

It is a painful and chronic inflammation of tissue at the bottom of the humerus at the elbow joint. The cause of tennis elbow is not in the use of the elbow but as a result of strenuous flexing or working of the wrist against resistance that is normally accompanied by repetitive shocks (like playing tennis). The pain and discomfort is in the elbow.

It is a common problem for tennis players but tennis elbow can be caused by many other sports and occupational activities like using hammers, power tools or even just by frequent use of a manual screwdriver (as in boat building).

It can be a very painful condition that inhibits movement of the arm or use of the hand and in severe cases can be disabling.

Recovery is prolonged and may mean that the arm cannot be used to its full capacity for several months. In most cases a tennis elbow will "burn out" and heal without medication or intervention but that could take up to six months.
