| Teething Description:
Teething starts at around five months and lasts until a child is about three
years old. During that time 20 teeth appear, often in pairs but mostly
haphazardly. The process of the teeth erupting through the periodontal
tissue causes inflammation and pain. Symptoms of teething are huge dollops of
drool, irritability (a desire to chew on something to relieve the itching
soreness followed by anger at the pain and discomfort that the chewing causes)
sleeping problems and refusal of food. As the baby gets older the symptoms ease
a little but often they remain severe through the full two and a half years it
takes to get their first set of teeth. As much as parents want to help the
process there is little that can be done. Rubbing the gums to speed the process
up is not recommended as it may introduce infections, which will make the
situation worse. Cold teething rings seem to ease some of the discomfort but
must be sterilised regularly to avoid infection.
