| Sciatica Description:
Sciatica is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve characterised by tenderness and
pain along the course of the sciatic nerve in the thigh and lower leg. It is
sometimes accompanied by a loss of feeling in the outer muscles of the thigh and
prolonged sciatica may even cause wasting of the muscles in the lower leg.
Sciatica is normally the result of a trauma in the lower back and should only
be treated after diagnosis by a qualified practitioner. Most treatments focus on
the suppression of inflammation and relief from pain (see
inflammation) as once there is structural and
mechanical damage it very rarely repairs. Sciatica is therefore likely to be
chronic. If this is the first time you are experiencing this sort of back
and leg pain go see your doctor, it may not be sciatica at all.
