An ovarian cyst is a sac that develops in or on the ovary filled with watery or bloody fluid or semi-solid matter. There may be many and they are likely to occur on both ovaries. In most cases they are symptom less and transient and has no effect on ovulation or other functions. You only become aware of them when some complications occur and then the symptoms could be painful periods, interference with the menstrual cycle causing irregularity and infertility. They may interfere with the balance of hormones, causing excessive hair growth and other symptoms.

 Chocolate cysts are ovarian cysts that are darkly pigmented due to an accumulation of the residues of ovarian bleeding during menstruation and are associated with endometriosis. They contain bits of uterine lining and normally occur on both ovaries.

 Several forms of tumors can also occur. Many of these are benign but statistically ovarian cancerous tumors are the biggest killer of all gynecological cancers.
