| Osteoporosis
Description: Although osteoporosis can affect men the majority of people
who have osteoporosis are women after menopause. Osteoporosis is an
inherited disorder that affects bones, making them brittle.
Calcium levels in the blood is controlled by either depositing calcium in
the skeletal system or absorbing calcium from the skeletal system. In people
that suffer from osteoporosis this process becomes defective and leaches too
much calcium out of the bones without replacement. Decalcified bones become
brittle and break very easily. In extreme cases bone marrow is damaged
causing anemia.
Osteoporosis is often not detected until something breaks (often a
vertebra in the lower back or a hip). Osteoporosis can not be reversed but
diet and sufficient calcium intake can inhibit the onset of this very
debilitating condition.
