| Mumps Description:
Mumps is an acute viral disease that is characterized by the swelling of the
parotid glands. Mumps is contagious well before the symptoms are noticed (almost
a week) and a person can remain contagious for 10 days after the swelling has
abated. Transmission is by droplets of saliva.
Mumps can happen at any age but it is rare after 14 years of age. When mumps
occur in adults it can be very severe.
There are many potential complications in adults including, arthritis and
pancreatitis but these complications are rare with the exception of adult males
who have a high chance of suffering from swollen gonads (testicles) which may
result in sterility (although this is rare).
