Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast in women mostly caused by
streptococcal or staphylococcal infection. Mastitis mostly occurs in the
first two months of breast feeding and is characterised by swollen, painful
breasts that are red and warm to the touch. Mastitis is sometimes accompanied by
fevers and chills. Mastitis can lead to abscesses being formed in the
inflamed tissue.
