| Incontinence Description:
Nursing diagnoses differentiates between bowel incontinence and urinary
incontinence.
Bowel incontinence is described as an involuntary passage of stools, which can
be caused by nervous disorders like stress, depression, anxiety, damage to the
muscles or skeleton in the bowel region or just generally not coping with life.
A single incident may be ignored but repetitive bowel incontinence may be due to
more serious conditions like cancer of the bowel and should be referred to a
doctor immediately.
Urinary incontinence is broken down into three categories:
Incontinence when certain urine volumes in the bladder is exceeded
Incontinence caused by sudden abdominal pressure like laughing sneezing or a
fright (this is normally accompanied by a small spurt of urine escaping), and
Urge incontinence when the incontinence is preceded by a strong need to urinate.
Urinary incontinence is mostly associated with degenerative deterioration or
change in pelvic muscles due to ageing but there are many other reasons such as
high intakes of caffeine, alcohol or other diuretics. Incontinence can also be
caused by a trauma or damage to the bladder or pelvic area. Again this must be
referred to your doctor as there are many conditions like prostate cancer when
incontinence may be the first symptom of a life threatening situation.
