Hoarseness is a gravelly, harsh, grating and scratchy voice. In some people it
is normal (in other words this is what their voice is always like) in others it
is a sign of inflammation or injury to the throat or larynx.
Hoarseness is normally an early indication of a cold or influenza and may be
accompanied by a blocked or runny nose and congestion of the chest.
