| Hepatitis Description:
Hepatitis describes several conditions that are only related because they all
affect the liver. Typical symptoms of hepatitis are: jaundice, abdominal
discomfort and pain, dark urine and loss of weight. Hepatitis A is a viral
infection normally contracted through contaminated food and water. The disease
develops slowly and may last for several months. Hepatitis B is a viral
infection normally spread through sexual contact or transfusion of contaminated
blood or use of contaminated needles and instruments. Hepatitis B can cause
prolonged illness and in severe cases permanent liver damage and even death.
Hepatitis C is almost only spread through blood transfusion or using
contaminated needles or instruments. It is rarely transmitted through sexual
contact. Most people that contract Hepatitis C will continuously suffer from the
disease as it progresses to chronic hepatitis in more than 75% of cases.
Hepatitis D will only occur in persons already suffering from Hepatitis B as it
needs the B strain virus to be present to replicate. Hepatitis D is transmitted
sexually and blood transfusion or contaminated needles and instruments.
Hepatitis D almost always becomes chronic. Hepatitis E and F are rarer
forms of Hepatitis and Hepatitis G is a mild form normally contracted form
contracted by IV drug users and in some hospital procedures.
