| Heatstroke Description:
Heat hyperpyrexia is the most acute form of the body being exposed to too much
heat for a prolonged period. This is a very serious condition which can lead to
fatality. When the body temperature is forced above 105˚ Fahrenheit for more
than a few minutes the first symptoms noticeable will probably be the cessation
of perspiration, which is a sign that the body is also dehydrating. Severe
headaches, seizures and loss of consciousness may follow soon. This condition
should not be treated at home, medical advice must be sought immediately and it
is likely that hospitalization will be needed.
Heat exhaustion differs from the above in that body temperature is almost normal
and has not yet escalated. Symptoms are nausea, headaches, vertigo, a sense of
weakness and cramps, all signs of dehydration. Loss of consciousness and
confusion may also be present.
Sunstroke can be either of the above conditions caused by exposure to the sun.
It may be accompanied by sunburn (red, sensitive skin) but this may only become
apparent later.
Although heat exhaustion is not as severe or as dangerous as heat hyperpyrexia
it is very difficult for a lay person to differentiate between the two
conditions so, unless the symptoms are mild, seek medical attention immediately.
Deterioration of heat hyperpyrexia can be very rapid and any delay in providing
the appropriate treatment may be fatal.
