| Grief Description:
Grief is erroneously regarded as an emotional problem and not a physical
symptom. This is not true. Although initially grief may be an emotional reaction
to a loss of a loved one, a heartbreak as a result of disappointed love or the
loss of a job or a standing in the community, it does have physical symptoms and
over time these become more severe.
Grief can cause increased heart rate, perspiration, increased respiratory rate,
indigestion, and other digestive system problems.
Grief is differentiated from depression in that it is of limited time and not an
ongoing condition. Over time the person will go through the shock of the event,
denial, anger and guilt and eventually acceptance. In some cases they never get
over it but then it is no longer grief but depression.
