| Gout Description:
Gout is caused by excessive levels of uric acid in the body either because the
body produces excess amounts or excretes too little. The excess uric acid is
converted into sodium urate which is deposited in the joints and other tissues.
It is when it builds up in a joint that it becomes painful. The joint swells
up, becomes very painful, and in extreme cases is accompanied by high
temperatures. More men are affected by gout than women. The toes,
especially one or both big toes, are the most common sites. Gout starts
very slowly and often goes away for long periods but eventually it can build up
to an extremely debilitating condition with extreme swelling of fingers and
toes.
