| Gangrene Description:
Gangrene is necrosis of tissue. (Necrosis is when the tissue cells die.)
From a mechanical point of view gangrene is almost always caused by a loss of
blood supply to the affected tissue. The cells die, bacteria takes hols and the
flesh literally rots. Gangrene normally occurs in an extremity of the arm
or leg but it can also affect the intestines and gall bladder as a result of
loss of blood supply (normally a strangulation of the organ cutting the blood
supply off). Gangrene in the extremities of arms and legs can be caused by any
form of obstruction of blood flow to the affected area. A tourniquet applied to
stem severe haemorrhaging may have been left on too long, bandages may be too
tight or it could have been caused by the trauma itself that arteries have been
rendered incapable of feeding blood into the affected area. Diabetes
mellitus can also cause gangrene but this is a gradual process of the affected
extremity first feeling cold for a prolonged period finally worsening to
gangrene.
