| Furuncle Description:
Furuncles are more commonly known as boils. A cluster of furuncles are called a
carbuncle.
Furuncles or boils are caused by an infection of a hair follicle or skin gland
(normally the bacterium staphylococcus aureus), forming a suppurated necrosis in
the centre of the infected area. Symptoms are painful (sometimes itchy) swollen
nodule, surrounded by redness.
A core of dead tissue form in the centre of the inflamed area which is either
extruded by the skin or absorbed by the body. In severe cases surgery may be
necessary to remove the dead tissue.
Boils or furuncles normally respond to treatment in a matter of days. If they do
not you should consult your doctor as it may spread rapidly to surrounding
tissue, lead to lymph gland infections and in severe cases infect the blood
causing bacteremia.
