| Food Poisoning Description:
Food Poisoning is acute gastroenteritis caused by eating contaminated or
poisoned food. Most commonly food poisoning is caused by a bacterium present in
food prepared in unhygienic circumstances, poorly refrigerated or reheated.
There are many bacteria that will cause food poisoning of which Salmonella and
E. Coli are probably the best known.
The bacteria multiply rapidly and release toxins in the gut.
It may take anything from an hour to as long as twelve hours for symptoms to
develop. These are typically nausea followed by vomiting and diarrhea. Abdominal
cramping, fevers, headaches and weakness may also occur.
With the exception of botulism, food poisoning is
rarely fatal. Full recovery normally occurs within a day and although there may
still be some latent tiredness or weakness most symptoms disappear too. Recovery
can be greatly assisted by drinking water and electrolytes (initially taking
only small sips often until vomiting has abated). Small children should be
monitored and taken to hospital id signs of dehydration are present.
