| Epilepsy Description:
Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain. This condition affects children mostly and
there is every chance that they will outgrow it by the time they are in puberty.
The condition is caused by an abnormality in the electrical function of the
brain. Although convulsions and a loss of consciousness are the most common
symptoms there may be other symptoms like incontinence, headaches, temporary
visual impairment, abnormal movement or twitching and abnormal sensations.
Seizures can last up to five minutes or be as brief as ten seconds. In severe
cases the person can be confused for a further period for up to ten minutes and
will likely not remember the incident afterwards.
The cause of Epilepsy is unknown. There is some evidence that suggests that it
is genetic (runs in families) and in the majority of cases it will disappear
after a few years.
The above symptoms may also be caused by a trauma or other damage to the brain
(tumor or growth). A single seizure may not be epilepsy, in fact it is unlikely,
and may be as a result of injury or disease. Do not attempt to diagnose and
treat at home, seek medical help as soon as possible.
See your doctor. There are many related disorders like Status Epilepticus that
are life threatening conditions. Convulsions that last for more than a minute or
so can also cause permanent brain damage.
Any alternative medication must be discussed with your doctor first.
