| Croup Description:
An acute viral infection (normally one of the influenza viruses) of the upper
and lower respiratory tract. Croup occurs mostly in infants up to three years
old. Symptoms are: a harsh cough, irritability, high temperature and
hoarseness. The condition always appears to be better in the morning and is most
acute at night. Acute croup should not be treated at home as the risks are
far too high. Patients may require treatment that is only available in your
local hospital (like tracheotomy, and oxygen if it is needed). Laryngeal
obstruction is common in croup patients and it can cause death. Children
with mild infections can be managed at home under medical supervision. The
humidity should be elevated and vaporisers or steam treatments should be used to
ease the symptoms. Where possible the patient should rest and be kept quiet and
calm. Croup patients dehydrate very easily. Boost liquid intake to ensure
proper hydration
