| Colitis Description:
Colitis is an inflammation of the large intestine. There are several diseases
that fall under the category of colitis and most are of unknown origin.
Colitis is characterised by constant diarrhoea, bleeding and ulceration of the
large intestine and is almost always painful. Weight loss is common.
Colitis is normally treated with steroids and antibiotics, both have significant
potential side effects. A very high fluid intake (including electrolytes)
and a strict diet is needed to keep this, often chronic, condition under
control. Anyone already on steroids or antibiotics must consult their
doctor before taking any other form of medication as it is very likely that
there will be some interaction.
