| Colic Description:
Colic is a pain caused by the distension of a hollow internal organ. Commonly
colic refers to a distension of the intestines. Adults do suffer from this
condition but it is rare, it is much more common in babies and young children.
Colic in babies normally start around 3 weeks old and lasts until three
months old, but it can last longer. Symptoms in babies are: restlessness,
very frequent crying and curling up of their legs. During this time the parents
(mostly mothers) are also under severe stress from lack of sleep and the
frustration of seemingly being unable to do anything about it. It is important
that this stress is acknowledged and managed. Colic does not last forever, but
it sure feels like it. A lot of the time this condition can be relieved
dramatically by ensuring that the baby burps after each feed. Air swallowed
during feeding is seen as the major cause of colic if it has to pass through the
intestines. With children that young it is essential that any treatment is
done under medical supervision.
