| Claustrophobia Description:
Claustrophobia is a fear of being trapped in confined places. The fear is not
logical but there are some links to a natural wariness to being trapped in a
physically compromising situation that dates back to the cave days and has
become a normal albeit suppressed instinct in all of us. When this natural
aversion turns into a morbid, illogical fear it is classified as claustrophobia.
Claustrophobia is observed more frequently in women than men and can normally be
traced to a childhood incident or earlier traumatic incident.
Conventional treatment is by psychotherapy either to discover and rationalize
the trauma that triggered Claustrophobia initially followed by counseling and
behavioral therapy to "teach" the individual ways of controlling and managing
the fear or desensitizing therapy that manages the reaction. Both these options
have mixed effectiveness and may only work after prolonged therapy.
Hypnotism has also been used for this condition. Hypnotism is not always
effective but has the advantage of being almost immediately effective if it will
help at all. Not everyone responds to hypnotism but those that do are often
cured or desensitized after a single session.
