| Cholesterol Control Description:
Elevated Cholesterol is known to be one of the major contributors. There are no
symptoms that easily identifies the likelihood of a problem (unless it is too
late), it requires a blood test to establish cholesterol levels.
Cholesterol is a sterol, a waxy lipid compound found in animal tissue. It is
synthesised by the liver and the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver is
reduced if cholesterol is ingested. Cholesterol is needed to play its
part in the absorption of fatty acids and is the precursor of many of the
steroid hormones (like cortisone, progesterone, oestrogen, testosterone etc)
Low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL - the bad cholesterol) is associated
with cardiovascular disease whereas high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL)
is regarded as the good cholesterol that lowers the risk of heart disease.
