| Botulism Description:
A form of food poisoning but that is where the
similarity ends. Food poisoning is not normally fatal while botulism often is.
Botulism is caused by the bacillus Clostridium Boyulinum which is normally
ingested in food (mostly of an animal nature like unpasturised milk or honey or
sausages - botulus is Latin for sausage) but in rare cases have been known to
enter the body through a wound, produces an endotoxin which is the cause of all
the trouble. It is not necessary to ingest the bacillus only the toxin. The
bacteria may have been eliminated by heating but the toxin may survive the
process and still be just as harmful.
Most Botulism occurs after eating contaminated food that has been improperly
cooked or canned.
Unlike food poisoning botulism develops gradually over two to ten days and is
not accompanied by gastric upsets. Initial symptoms are blurry vision and
fatigue, which may develop into the pupil's inability to adjust to light and
extreme exhaustion to the point of collapse. Gastric distress symptoms like
nausea, vomiting and diarrhea occur in less than fifty percent of the cases.
Hospitalization is essential as only one in four people survive botulism and
even those have a long road to recovery. Treat a botulism victim at home and it
is almost a certainty that you will have a fatality (or two, if someone else in
the house contracts it).
