Vitamin D

Page Summary:
Vitamin D is treated as a constituent on this page - also see our vitamin pages.
In herbal, homeopathic and all other natural medicine, like in modern pharmacology, a constituent is an individual chemically defined ingredient or substance present in the herb or plant (or in the case of Homeopathy and many Eastern and Asian therapies it is extended far beyond the plant kingdom).
This page brings you all of the information that we have been able to gather on Vitamin D as well as a list of the herbs (and the rest) that contain this constituent.

Vitamin D:

Vitamin D is produced by the body when exposed to the sun. Vitamin D is important to control blood clotting but its major function in the body is to facilitate and control the absorption of calcium in the body without which we cannot form strong bones and teeth. A shortage of Vitamin D causes the body to supplement calcium levels in the blood by leaching it out of bone which, over a prolonged period will severely weaken the skeletal system.

Vitamin D is abundantly present in Cod Liver Oil, Mackerel and Herrings. Two canned pilchards contain enough Vitamin D to satisfy an adult's body's needs. It is also present in margarine, tuna, salmon and some cheeses.

Vitamin D1
Mostly known as just Vitamin D it is a fat soluble vitamin that is similar in chemical structure to some steroids. Although present in many food sources it is in minute quantities unless artificially enriched. The body relies almost exclusively on exposure to sunlight to be able to produce its own Vitamin D but it is also present (in small amounts) in fish and fish products.

Vitamin D2 also called Calciferol:
A transport or intermediate form of Vitamin D

Vitamin D3:
A crystalline unsaturated alcohol present in animal and fish tissue as the major form of Vitamin D.

Vitamin D constituent is present in:

Medicinally Significant volume

Minor volume
Vitamin D is present in small quantities which may not be enough to be a significant dosage for medicinal purposes or is not the major constituent of this plant/herb
