A potent analgesic (pain reliever) fever reducer and anti-inflammatory substance. Salicin and the closely related Salicylic acid can have many serious side effects the most noted are: internal bleeding, diarrhoea, nausea and respiratory paralysis in large doses.
Salicin is initially hydrolysed in the body to salicyl alcohol in the gut and then oxidated in the liver to salicylic acid.
Salicin containing herbs are primarily used as analgesics, febrifuges and anti-inflammatory.
Salicin is milder than salicylic acid (aspirin) on the gut having less tendency to cause gastric haemorrhage (this is because it is only converted to salicylic acid after absorption in the gut).
However people with salicylic sensitivity should avoid salicin containing compounds.
