Atropine: A Tropane solanaceous alkaloid present in Deadly
Nightshade (Belladonna) but also found in lesser concentrations in other plants.
Atropine is a deadly poison that is not used in therapeutic applications other
than Homeopathy where dilution is so extreme that it is relatively safe.
|
Tropane alkaloids: These are very complex molecules. Medicinal
Tropane alkaloids are almost exclusively from the solanaceae group (the
exception being cocaine). All tropane alkaloids are extremely poisonous.
Sympoms include thirst, mydriasis (dilation of the pupils) and associated vision
impairment, hallucinations and loss of consciousness which can rapidly lead to
death. Mild poisoning symptoms are dryness of skin and dehydration (one must
assume that these symptoms also apply to severe cases of poisoning but as
tropane alkaloids are fast acting death could occur before noticing the
symptoms). |
