Alginates:
Gelatinous substances derived from seaweed gums. These gums are hydrophilic and are indigestible and their
primary interaction when ingested is local to the mucous membrane spreading into
a protective layer. This effect is of major importance in the case of irritated
mucus membrane as it is in the case of irritable bowel syndrome.
Alginates are used as antacids against gastric reflux and
other irritated mucus membrane conditions.
In the cosmetic world Alginates are used as emulsifiers in
body lotions and creams and as thickening agents in shampoos and lotions.
Sodium alginate, from brown seaweed, is being investigated for a possible
birth-deforming effect in pregnant women.
Alginates are hydrophilic and used in the food industry as water retainers and
stabilisers. |
