Alcohols: Alcohols occur widely in the plant kingdom.
Alcohols are strongly antimicrobial and far less likely to irritate the skin
than phenols (which are also antimicrobial).
Alcohol is very widely used in the cosmetic industry as a solvent in many
preparations, as an antiseptic by beauty, medical and other therapists and also
to sterilize implements. It is also a major ingredient of most cosmetics like
after shave lotions, cologne, deodorants, perfumes, skin lotions and face masks
and packs.
Terpene alcohols are highly valued in essential oils where they contribute to
the fragrance as well as being responsible for the antimicrobial property of
many of the popular therapeutic essential oils.
